Come See the Christmas Village at the Library

For nearly three decades, Park Ridge resident Ken Lydecker has been creating a miniature Christmas village in his home for his children and grandchildren. Lydecker, who has been featured on local television for his annual Christmas Village displays, has also exhibited at local libraries and community centers in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. This is the second time he is sharing his love for collecting and creating a Christmas village with the Park Ridge Public Library.

What started as a family project on a card table with six or seven unpainted ceramic houses has now blossomed into a vast array of houses, trees, mountains, rivers, people and woodland creatures that one year consumed two rooms of his home. Another year, in his quest for realism, he was seen by neighbors carrying huge boulders and landscaping rocks into his home to include in the display. His family refers to his annual activity as "ingenuity run amuck!"

"Perhaps the best compliment I have received (other than the smiling faces of my family) was when WGN Channel 9 came on Christmas Eve to film the village I'd created. Upon seeing the incredible detail, TV reporter Steve Sanders said, ‘It makes you want to shrink down to a size small enough to actually be in the village,’" said Lydecker.

Lydecker is the owner of the Des Plaines financial services firm Preferred Planning Concepts LLC.
