McClellan will construct the history of road building in the state and will discuss the colorful names given to various interstates and highways before they were distinguished by numbers. He will describe how changes in American culture and society have impacted transportation in Illinois. "Road travel is an integral part of American life and mythology, including our work commute, summer travels, literature, and movies," said History Center Curator Philip Mohr. "It will be wonderful to learn the history of something we grind under our feet and tires on a daily basis."
"Road Tripping" rides along with the History Center’s new travel exhibit "Greetings from Des Plaines."
Guests are invited to tour the display after the talk.

"Each year we are pleased to host a dynamic lineup of speakers who deliver presentations in our community. Often, topics for the Coffee Talks will line up with topics for the Book Discussion Group and current Exhibits.
Coffee Talks are held either at the History Center or at one of our partner's facilities in Des Plaines. They also rotate between times: Thursday afternoons, Thursday evenings, and Sunday afternoons. Be sure to check the date, time, and location of all upcoming COFFEE TALKS on our calendar or programs bulletin. As its name implies, refreshments are always served. There is a suggested $3 donation at the door."
