In 1909 Mamah Borthwick Cheney and Frank Lloyd Wright fell in love. They were both married to other people and had eight children to care for between them. Flouting the social mores of their time and abandoning their family obligations, they ran off together, living for a time in Europe and later settling in Wisconsin. It was there that Mr. Wright built Taliesin for Mamah, and their story moved into a violent and tragic finale. Through performance artist Ellie Carlson, Mamah returns to our world to tell her own true story, of a woman who defied the gender roles of her Victorian times, and paid a terrible price for her love.
