Why Redistricting Matters in Changing Illinois - League of Women's Voters

07:00 PM - 08:30 PM

Park Ridge Public Library
20 S. Prospect Avenue
Park Ridge, IL , 60068

847-292-1867

Come Find out Why Redistricting Matters from the Non-Partisan League of Women Voters of Cook County. Learn the "What and the How" for changing the way districts are drawn for the Illinois Legislature - and WHY IT MATTERS! Sponsored by: The League of Women Voters of Park Ridge

Christopher Butler, Illinois Field Director of Independent Maps will talk about the non-partisan reform effort which is circulating petitions to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in 2016. The goal is to have legislative districts drawn by a non-partisan group, not the party in power when the census is taken. This event is sponsored by the Park Ridge League of Women voters and the Northwest Suburban branch of AAUW.

Legislative Districts, which determine which legislators represent which group of residents, are redrawn every ten years following the US Census. Many districts are gerrymandered to allow the political party in charge of the process to win more seats in elections. Some legislators are even drawn out of their districts. Many seats are uncontested because the district is drawn in such a way to make it impossible for the opposing party to win. Independent Maps is a grassroots, non partisan coalition dedicated to reform legislative redistricting in Illinois by amending the constitution to change the way districts are drawn.
