Five Good Reasons Your Job Search Starts at the Library

For many people looking for work, the current job market can be daunting – especially if you haven’t ventured into that territory for several years.

Reducing the stress of a job search means knowing where to turn for assistance. Here are a few reasons why any job seeker’s plan of action should have the Park Ridge Public Library at the top of the list:

Workshops and classes for job seekers. Every month the Library hosts the "Power Employment Workshop," led by volunteers from the Illinois workNet center. This hands-on event offers solid advice for today’s jobseeker, including goal-setting, strategies for job searches and resumes (including how to get your resume through an employer’s Applicant Tracking System, which screens submissions), as well as tips on mastering interviews.

"Job Hunting on the Internet," one of our technology class offerings, provides a great introduction on how to use the significant resources available online through the Library. We also offer classes that cover Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as the latest media trends.

The best online resources.  At the Library you’ll find listings of recommended websites for job seekers, as well as Premium Resources that are only available with a library card. These include Learning Express, which offers tests and tutorials for polishing your skills, and other sites where you can research companies and industries.

Extensive print resources. Not all useful information can be found online, and having easy access to current books, periodicals, newspapers, and other print media can assist with everything from career exploration to resume writing.

Free mentoring sessions for Park Ridge cardholders. The Library currently engages the volunteer services of experienced professionals who mentor both fledgling entrepreneurs and job seekers. Mentoring sessions are available to Park Ridge residents every Tuesday at the Library, and can run from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the feedback sought.

Public computers. Library workstations give you access to Microsoft Office products, as well as to online job boards. Black and white printing is available for 10 cents a page.

And don’t forget: librarians are always on hand to assist you in finding the best tools for your job search!
