Join the Library's Winter Reading Clubs—January 2 - February 28

According to the 2017 Farmer’s Almanac, "winter is back!" It forewarns that exceptionally cold, if not downright frigid weather will predominate in our area. What better way to spend it than indoors with a book.  Start the year off right by joining one of our Reading Clubs for adults, teens or children beginning January 2 and running through February 28. Besides print, you can download eBooks or listen to audiobooks.  Readers of all ages will have the opportunity to win fantastic prizes (sponsored by the Friends of the Library) if they meet their reading goals. Last year nearly 900 readers participated in the Winter Reading Clubs. Patrons can register online, by phone or in person.

Adults – Reading is Snow Much Fun

Settle in and enjoy the snow this winter with a good book! Sign up at the Reader Services desk to receive your Winter Reading log. Finish four books to earn a chance to win gift cards to local businesses. Last year, 155 people read 612 books. Prizes included gift cards to TeaLula, Starbucks, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods—presented in a souvenir PRPL mug with tea honey. Participants signing up on the first day will receive a bonus prize (while supplies last).

Teens – Warm Up With a Good Book

Everyone has a chance to earn prizes this winter. Enter a raffle to win a Starbucks gift card just for signing up.  When you read one book, you are entered in a second raffle and also take home a free paperback book.  Last year, 126 teens participated in the Winter Reading Club.

Children – Read With Me Under the Sea!

This winter, dive under the waves and into a good book. Upon signing up, each child will get to decorate a fish that will be on display in the Children’s department.  The Winter Reading Club encourages kids and families to read every day this winter. When children reach their goals of reading at least 20 days— they will get to choose a book to keep for their home library! Last year, 615 kids participated in the Winter Reading Club.

Chicago Wolves Reading Club (Grades 1 – 8)

Get in the reading game and join the Chicago Wolves’ "Read to Succeed" program. Kids receive a prize just for signing up and have the opportunity to win more Wolves prizes as they keep reading. The Chicago Wolves Reading Club encourages kids to read at least 20 minutes a day. Register in the Children’s Services department. We hold a weekly raffle for all kids who complete their reading goal—100 minutes per week.  Prizes are fun Wolves gear including pennants, hats and sunglasses. You could even win tickets to a Chicago Wolves game! Last year, 91 kids participated in the Wolves Reading Club.

We have also planned a fun event to reward all winter readers. A Wolves player will be at the Library on March 1 at 4 p.m.  to sign autographs, give kids and their families a close-up look at the hockey gear and talk about what it’s like to play pro hockey.  (All kids are welcome. You do not have to be registered for the Winter Reading Club to come to this program).
